New Ethics and New Morals
Paragraph 10.10.1
New Ethics and New Morals
In this perspective, it behooves us to make efforts to establish the new systems of values, ethics, and morals based on the teachings of the Buddha. The world is the structure of ethics. As it has ethics and morals as the base of its structure, the creation and destruction of the universe itself is not so much the natural scientific phenomena as the ethical and moral phenomena.

Paragraph 10.10.2
When the human beings become so degenerate that they are no longer able to improve and cannot grow into arahants, the whole universe would come to an end. The Buddha thought of the expansion and contraction of the universe in this way. If human beings make too many mistakes in this secular world, the universe would be destroyed. It resonates with the story of the Noachian Deluge.

Paragraph 10.10.3
On a superficial observation, the secular world seems natural as it has trees, animals, and stones; however, in reality, the basic principles that underlie the movements of earth, water, fire, and air are ethical and moral. Human beings are to realize those principles of ethics and morals. It is not that human beings created ethics and morals, but that human beings came into being as the universe is to realize the principles of ethics and morals. The mind of a human being to embody ethics and morals is mano, the mind or consciousness.1

Paragraph 10.10.4
Therefore, in order for science to stop destroy and take the correct path, the scientists should change their views of the universe and human beings; they should attune their views to the teachings of the Buddha. While humans continue to engage in destructive activities, they cry out for the prevention of desertification; while they continue to develop nuclear weapons, they cry out "no more destruction of the earth"; while they continue to exhume carbon dioxides, they try to present global warming. Does it make any sense?

Paragraph 10.10.5
These are due to the misconception of the relation between man and nature. Human beings are not simply theoretically but practically the center of the universe. Human beings are the agents of making karmas. Animals and plants do not make karmas. With what do human beings make karmas? With the mano! The “three activities”(三行) of body, speech, and mind remain in the right-ordered view of the Law of Dependent Origination; they merely increase suffering. However, as the three karmas (三業) of body, speech and mind are the agents of the reverse-ordered view of the Law of Dependent Origination, they contribute toward the annihilation of suffering. In the concept of "volitional activities" are included feelings (perception) and thoughts (ideation); in the karmic activities is included the karma of mind (意業), not the karma of thought (想業) or the karma of heart (心業). Human beings make karma with the mind; the karmas they make have the power to determine the fate of the universe.

Paragraph 10.10.6
For this reason, having been born in the bodies of human beings, we ought to accumulate good karmas. In order to accumulate good karmas we should follow the Noble Eightfold Path. This is not a matter of choice. However potent science might be, if it deviates from the Noble Eightfold Path, it will bring disaster and destruction to humanity.

Paragraph 10.10.7
Rather than the manifestation of the Buddha's Dhamma, the ethics and morals of the past have been the convenient guides for living in the secular world. Science today which has been based on such ethics and morals have shown its obvious limits as the guideline for humanity in the stunning aging of great transformation.

Paragraph 10.10.8
In the future, the people of the West will continue to elevate their rationality to the maximum by continuing to exercise their abilities to think clearly and objectively in self-serving manners. In contrast, the people of the east should embrace Western culture by strengthening their own distinctive cultural merits. Mercy and wisdom in Buddhist terms, and benevolence and righteousness in Chinese terms are of the highest virtues for humanity. By taking advantage of these values, we should contribute toward attuning human life to the ethical structures of the universe.

Paragraph 10.10.9
Why you were born in the East, especially in the land of Korea, is because you are supposed to strengthen the merits of being Korean. It is not for you to become half-baked Westerners. Therefore, you should take pride in the Dhamma of the Buddha. The Dhamma of the Buddha is way greater than science. The Dhamma teaches the Three Realms and Nibbana; it is a huge system that aims at the enlightenment. Of all truth-claims, it is the highest.

Paragraph 10.10.10
We cannot follow the Buddha's Dhamma with our brains or mouths. We cannot play it with our six bases (Āyatana). We should exercise not the bases but the roots. Each and every one of us has these six roots (faculties): the faculty with which to understand the Buddha's Dhamma; the faculty with which to develop the Dhamma. Particularly, the root of consciousness suggests that we have great cultural potentials. In order to establish the foundation of new ethics and morals for humanity in the future, we should let it live and grow. Moreover, we can integrate the Buddha's Dhamma and Science in a harmonious way. In this perspective, we should find meanings for having been born as Koreans in this life. I'd like to urge to do your best to make the most of your potentials in this life.
