The World Unfolding via Concentration
Paragraph 10.5.1
The World Unfolding via Concentration
By the way, I nodded in delight while reading the the Aggañña Sutta because I dozed off sitting for meditation in the chan (zen) room. Those who have sat in the chan room have a completely different eye from those who have only been sitting at a desk all their lives researching the Buddhist doctrines. Sitting at a desk, what the Western scholars say of Buddhism seems to make sense. We would believe that "the ancient Indian people looked at the world in those ways. If we get engrossed in the state of concentration, we would fall into a trance and see those fantasies as real."

Paragraph 10.5.2
Those who work at concentration in a wrong day would go insane. It would be difficult for them to develop rationality if they solely work at concentration. For this reason, it has always been advised that we pursue the twin practice of concentration and wisdom. If you solely work at concentration, you would be like a spaceship aimlessly traveling in the universe.

Paragraph 10.5.3
The Buddha placed concentration at the end of the Noble Eightfold Path, and said: "right concentration is the four dhyāna." This means that the purpose of the four dhyāna should be right concentration. The four dhyāna comprises the form realm. It is emphasized that the form realm should be central for our understanding of the Three Realms. From the various Sutta, we can see that the Three Realms is not a mere part of the Buddha's teachings, but its core or backbone. Therefore, to understand the Three Realms is a tormenting problem for Western scientists, Hindi as well as the Buddhists of later ages.

Paragraph 10.5.4
Do you know of the non-returners (annaham)? It means to enter the the four dhyāna of the form realm. In the four dhyāna of the form realm, the seven heavens exist. Among these seven heavens, the fifth and above are called the five heaves of pure residence. To reside in those heavens is called the non-returners (annaham).

Paragraph 10.5.5
According to the theory of the Three Realms, above the desire realm lies form realm, and above the form realm lies the formless realm. The Buddha decides not to return from the fourth dhyāna of the form realm, and enters into the state of nibbāna. It means that he passed through the five heavens of pure residing and entered into the state of nibbāna. The state of nibbāna is the final destination of the ultimate enlightenment. Why, then, did he go directly into the state of nibbāna from the form realm without passing through the highest formless realm? The Buddhist scholars have a difficult time as they try to fathom this part of the Buddha's teachings. Most scholars explain it away by saying that concentration in the formless realm is the highest, and the cessation of ideation and feeling (saññā-vedayita-nirodha) is the nibbāna. In Chinese Chinese, nibbāna is translated into jietuo 解脫, however, in the Pali scriptures, it is discerned into 'vimokkha’ and 'vimutti.’

Paragraph 10.5.6
Concentration in the formless realm is 'vimokkha'; however, what the Buddha taught us solemnly is 'vimutti,’ the nibbāna of wisdom, in distinction with 'vimokkha.' In Classical Chinese, the distinction between the two is simply ignored as the two were equally translated into jietuo. In English translations, scholars employ slightly different terms for the two terms, but they think they mean more or less the same. In most Buddhist dictionaries, the term jietuo and 涅槃 are defined as synonyms.

Paragraph 10.5.7
However, the Buddha does not employ different terms to refer to the same thing. The Buddha uses each and every term in a highly meticulous way. He never uses any redundant words. He puts the right words at the right places. The Dhamma ought to be like that.

In this light, science today cannot match the precision of the Buddha's Dhamma. Science explains in a high precise way. By elaborating language based on precise definitions of concepts, science picks the most appropriate terms and places them in a most precise way. On this point, however, the Dhamma is as precise, if not more.

That I think is the rationalism of Buddhism. In terms of rationality, Buddhism is never behind science. Although Buddhism and science share rationality, there is a fundamental difference between the two.
