Truth As a Stand-Alone Value
Paragraph 12.4.1
As noted before, while the West has adopted goodness as a guiding value of the society, Buddhism has from the beginning followed truth as the main subject. And along the way, it has also come to recognize and tried to grapple with the problem of its abstract aspect which pursuit of truth has raised. This has been a peculiar tradition in the world.

Paragraph 12.4.2
Truth, as compared to the notions of beauty and ugly and those of good and evil, contains a totally different characteristic. First of all, truth should be permanent in time and always consistent. Truth can not change day to day. It should not be susceptible to change of time. This permanence is the first characteristic of truth.

Paragraph 12.4.3
At the same time, truth should remain consistent in space regardless of circumstances and environments. Consistency throughout time and space means that it transcends time and space. While being trapped in time and space, consistency is not attainable. That is due to the fact that they themselves are in a continuous and relative state of flux and change.

Paragraph 12.4.4
You may have heard that time essentially does not exist on its own. If everything including sky, earth and people stands still, time becomes irrelevant. For example, the concept of "a day" reflects a change which a shift of movement in relative relations between the sun and earth dictates. If they stop moving, time also stops. That is, time is premised on movement and change. Then one may come to a logical conclusion that within the frame of time, consistency can not be attainable. Truth is out of question in the state preconditioned by continuously changing time and space. Accordingly, it is clear that truth may become effective only when it transcends time and space.

Paragraph 12.4.5
Unfortunately, our daily lives, however, are completely trapped in time because our minds are continuously obsessed with past and future. In terms of space, we also tend to delude ourselves over where happiness truly resides, thus inviting unending suffering. Nobody is free from this.

Paragraph 12.4.6

These days the principle of uncertainty is said to have gained currency in science. The paradigm based on a belief that things of the world are run by a certain orderly principle has been upended by a series of conflicting new discoveries. The word of uncertainty contains a feeling of embarrassment. Naturally people must feel baffled by this new development which undermines a century-old faith about the God and preordained existence of eternal heaven and hell. In this regard, the Buddha clearly defines the principle around which the world is organized and run by declaring three marks of existence, the Dhamma: All things change(제행무상), Suffering(고) and Non-self(무아)Here is what he says as follows:

That all material form is impermanent,
That which is impermanent is unsatisfactory,
That which is unsatisfactory is not suitable to be considered that it is me, that I am, that is myself

Paragraph 12.4.7
The message that the Buddha wants to send is that we should not expect the savior to come to our rescue. That will never happen. We are our own savior. How? We should try to turn our attention towards inside ourselves, that is, constituting elements of ourselves(attached five aggregates(오취온) of matter, feeling, perception, intention and consciousness(색, 수, 상, 행, 식)). How? Try to see 'as it is now and here'. To turn attention outside, expecting something, and to be obsessed with the future and past, hoping for a better one or lamenting past errors all amount to life driven by outside. It is simply vain and even destructive.

Paragraph 12.4.8
To live now and here means, instead of drifting away to the future or past, tieing mind to the moment of the present. If your mind does not drift away, each passing moment of the present time allows you to transcend time, thus living in permanence. Outside of time. It may sound counterintuitive, but it is simple. If you would succeed in attaching your mind well to now and here, you eventually end up in remaining in the same present eternally. This way, you could maintain consistency in relationship between you and things(사물).

Paragraph 12.4.9
To see as it is signifies an attitude to engage in and see a thing (끌어들여서 본다) with an intention of penetrating into its essence as it is without being deluded by glitzy outside appearances. If you could accept things as it is as they happen at each moment of now and here, it is like living in eternity. You and everything remain motionless. Thus, time and space become irrelevant to you because they come to lose meanings for you living the present moment.

Paragraph 12.4.10
Truth which transcends time and space is a concept directly opposed to falsehood. But these days distinction between truth and falsehood has become more difficult because of technological development. The technology of virtual reality is widely used today. Since the civilization comes under a great influence of virtual reality, the distinction is being diluted. For example, if one is asked a hypothetical, also somewhat silly, question of which one between a famous Korean navy admiral Yi and a famous actor who featured the general in a hit movie is greater, answers will vary depending upon perspectives of replying persons. Actors often make huge fortunes and even gain political and social influence.

This new technological advance has ushered in a period when any efforts to make distinction between truth and falsehood have become further complicated. Anyway, currently interest in and discussion about the distinction remains scant and at most limited to the discussion about Western medicine and scientism. A dichotomized view of "Occidental science is true while pseudo one is false, thus Oriental science is false" or "Occidental religion is true while Oriental one is false", or "Occidental medicine is true while Oriental one is false" etc, represents what happens for the distinction. Sadly It remains at a frustratingly low level.

Such ignorance about truth in the West has resulted in beauty playing a dominant role with goodness a supporting role while truth being out of sight. Even though truth is adored, it is obscured by beauty and goodness. This phenomenon has prevailed more or less throughout the human history, not being limited to modern times.

Paragraph 12.4.13
Obsession with goodness and evil obstructs our efforts to get to the essence of truth. Why is it? That is due to the fact that it is premised on relations between you and me within the frame of time and space, therefore susceptible to change. In this sense, so-called religions can not take up issues which are outside the bounds of time and space. Lacking development in consciousness of time and space by religions has forced them to take refuge in the concept of "eternity". They usually refer to the notion of "eternal heaven" or "eternal hell". That is problematic. Since the concept of goodness or evil is time-bound and relative, one can not claim to deserve eternal rewards of heaven for certain good deeds. It is against logic. When the human beings would grow out of this low level of thinking?

We need to graduate forever from the era of religion which is dominated by relative values. For that to happen, due attention should be directed towards examining languages which underpin our thinking about concepts such as time and space as well as truth, goodness and beauty and towards according proper status to them. Needless to say, distorted yardstick could not guarantee fairness in approaching them.

There was a time in history when logic and reasoning of the nationalistic zeal of the great powers prevailed. Under such environments, any form of thinking such as concepts of goodness vs evil and beauty vs ugliness retained appeal. And since problems were not that serious and limits posed by such attitudes could be overcome at that time, need for truth was not felt that much urgently. Damages we could have done to the earth were manageable because our ability was limited.

But things have changed and posed sensitive problems. Humans gained overwhelming power compared to the old times, thus increasing chances of wrecking havoc to the earth. They say that existing nuclear bombs can destroy the planet hundreds of times. Nobody could escape from this dire situation. Nonetheless, humans do not seem to realize enormity of our strength and gravity of the problems they raise. Level of mindset of the human beings still remains stuck in that of primitive times when competitive instincts prevailed for survival. Seen through the prism of truth taken in isolation, mindset based on the relative value of truth has also brought with it tremendous harmful effects.

In short, we need to look squarely at the fact that once truth, goodness and beauty are taken separately in isolation, we will be faced with unimaginable negative results.
