Approaching Craving, Anger, Delusion Through the Prism of Buddhist Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom
Paragraph 12.6.1
How we approach craving, anger and delusion through precepts, concentration and wisdom? We start with craving. We call it a practice of precepts to control these three ills of mind with putting craving at the center. All Buddhists should be familiar with precepts, concentration and wisdom, I suppose. Precepts are concerned with strictly practicing ethical restraints in words, acts and livelihood.

Paragraph 12.6.2
Craving constitutes a foundation of our society, affecting all aspects of our daily lives. Market economy infinitely instigates and maximizes craving of people under the disguise of 'beauty'. In this light, practicing precepts is regarded as essential to fight against craving. Well practiced, it allows people to pause a little while from swirling forces of market temptation and to do self reflection. In doing so, It naturally leads people to evaluate their material needs and consumption behavior more closely. It involves requiring people to take concrete actions, not pretending to do perfunctory practice. In short, it urges us to ask ourselves 'what are material needs and whether they are really necessary'. This is all about precepts.

Paragraph 12.6.3
The next step is how to approach controlling anger. While people are generally aware of negative effects of craving, they tend to find it difficult to recognize anger as such because it is cunningly disguised and hidden. For instance, while nationalism and patriotism are naturally lauded, people fail to discern that they also reflect anger against other enemy countries.

Paragraph 12.6.4
Patriotism involves love of own country as well as hate of enemies. This hidden aspect is not easily revealed. Anger uses specious justification as cover, thus rendering itself difficult to be recognized. Its favorite choice is the existing value which people have a firm belief in. With that cover, it rules us and makes it difficult to recognize and oppose it.

Paragraph 12.6.5
When we do self reflection, we may realize how much we have become blinded by existing values. That is why we need to practice mental concentration. Needless to say, it should be done within the frame of a complete, sufficient and harmonious realization of precepts, concentration and wisdom. That way only we can manage to control anger. Sitting on the floor with crossed legs and straight spine, try to calm your mind. Then calm state of mind invites all sorts of delusion and anguish, which surprise us. Tracing back when and where they started and remained hidden inside ourselves, we may find the root cause in the form of lots of direct and indirect educations taken and infused in previous life as well as inside wombs of mother, childhood, family life, school life and social experiences of this life. These things constitute the foundation of delusions and fill our mind to the full.

Paragraph 12.6.6
Delusion stands in the way of our efforts to control anger, which leads us to feel doubt and scepticism about the possibility of attaining liberation and Nibbana, the highest level of mind which humans can reach, while we still continue to harbor a hope for its realization. This is the function of values infused and indoctrinated inside us. They, shrouded in deliberate reasoning and justification and defended by plausible system, are hidden deep in our mind and attack us in the form of craving, anger and delusion when we set out on pursuing truth, goodness and beauty. Sadly enough, these infused existing views sabotage our efforts to achieve mental maturation, and at the same time take us to a more degenerating and corrupt view.

Paragraph 12.6.7
No existing books or perspectives guide us to find calmness. Rather, they, instead of being helpful in gaining concentration for self reflection and internal calmness, work towards instigating craving, anger and delusion which are armed with blind values. Excellent books even have possibilities of making readers blind followers. The same is with religious books. They can make us not as much wise persons pursuing eternal freedom and Nibbana as combatants armed with ideologies.

We need to seek solution by sitting on the floor with crossed legs, instead of sitting in the 'table' in order to attain concentration. If you remain satisfied with reading Buddhist books including the Suttanipata in the table, you are no more than Buddha's blind follower. The last thing he hoped for is foolish people who have blind faith in him. What a pity. Contrary to his teaching which shows a way to liberation from such fixed views, people have come to turn his teaching into shackles of another view.

This is the reason why the Buddha teaches us; 'to practice concentration after cultivating precepts, to sit on the floor, to look inside your mind, and to face anguish and delusion rocking your mind. ' With sitting on the floor and calmness setting in, you may be surprised to see that you are full of anger, let alone craving. Your values, thought to be the highest and purest, are all rooted in anger. Problems are that much serious. Only sitting on the floor guides us to such a realization.

Finally, as for truth among the three values, as I said before, the Buddha points out delusion behind its problems, and teaches us to approach it with the instrument of wisdom with an eye to overcome it. Once we successfully cultivate wisdom, along the way we may overcome delusion and reach the truth. That is, elimination of delusion opens our eye for wisdom, thus allowing us to see things 'as it is', the truth.

Paragraph 12.6.11
But cultivation of wisdom alone is not enough. It should go hand in hand with that of precepts and concentration with a help of right understanding of essential attributes of craving, anger and delusion through shedding light on them according to the Dhamma. For that we naturally have to follow the Noble Eightfold Path, core of the Buddha's teaching. The Right View in the Path is directly related to wisdom. The Path, which plays a role of guiding practice of precepts, concentration and wisdom, suggests the Right View as the starting point. In our struggle to confront and control craving, anger and delusion, we should resort to the Right View, the Buddha's wisdom, as the starting point. That is, right understanding of world affairs, attributes of humans and elements constituting human beings should be the basis of our practice.

Paragraph 12.6.12
Who are the human beings? What and how they think? These are what interested the Buddha. According to the canon, after leaving worldly life, he tried various types of existing ascetic training at first. Finding those were not satisfactory, he finally succeeded in gaining enlightenment through the Path and fourth stage of concentration. What this story tells us? It means that he did not pay attention to abstract and external phenomena in his pursuit of truth. Resolutely he refused to be distracted by those issues, and finally found the answer. He came to his great finding that human beings consist of five attached heaps of matter, feeling, perception, formation and consciousness, and that they are the roots of suffering. And that shedded light on all the puzzles about life and human beings.

Before him, those who pursued truth could not go beyond abstract thinking. On the other hand, he took the right way and was successful in reaching the truth. We do not respect him because he cures our disease or brings bless to us. The reason why we adore the Sakyamuni Buddha so much is that his teaching about suffering attributes its roots to basic constituting elements of five attached heaps, and at the same time suggests the right way to overcome suffering. This is why we express our adoration of and gratitude to him in ceremonies dedicated to him day and night.

Paragraph 12.6.14
The truth in his teaching is called the Four Noble Truth, namely The Truth about Suffering, Truth about the Origin of the Suffering, Truth about the Termination of Suffering and Truth about the Noble Eightfold Path. The Truth about Suffering explains that a universal characteristic of all beings, trapped in endless cycles of rebirth(samsara), are faced with suffering, that is being unsatisfactory. The Truth about the Origin of the Suffering illuminates that suffering is attributed to craving and that craving guarantees endless cycles of rebirth. The Truth about the Termination of Suffering suggests that elimination of craving terminates suffering. To realize the termination of suffering in a right way, The Truth about the Path expounds its eight elements, namely Right View, Right Thinking, Right Speech, Right Actions, Right Livelihood, Right Efforts, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.

Paragraph 12.6.15
What clearly differentiates Buddhism from other religious teachings is reflected in the fact that Buddhism emphasizes the Right View as the starting point of right practice. This is a unique characteristic of Buddhism. For instance, Christianity begins with the story about God by referring to 'a word at the beginning of the world and creator'. We can not verify his existence, which naturally leads to imagination, abstractedness and concepts. It is unrealistic to think that abstract concept would be able to free people from suffering, realistic and concrete problems.

Paragraph 12.6.16
Too much desperate to escape from suffering, you fail to recognize it as it is. However trying, you are gradually trapped into deeper quagmire of 'suffering'. Despite harboring a hope of escape from suffering, what you actually do is to contribute unwittingly to strengthening it every seconds and minutes in your daily lives. What a pity and a foolish thing! That is why the Buddha teaches us 'to look inside ourselves as it is and properly. ' That is due to the fact that we can not see external things as it is. Any telescope or microscope would not help. We simply see things as reflected and perceived, but that process of reflection and perception remains subject to arbitrary refraction and change. If we can not see ourselves as it is, we are not able to see other people and external things properly. That failure prevents us from recognizing suffering as well as great potentiality of ourselves. We do not recognize how great we are. With such a perverted mental state, we spoil all the opportunities which our existence presents us to achieve mental maturation.

Paragraph 12.6.17
In a nutshell, the Path has nothing to do with abstractedness. The Right View in the Path is about correctly understanding the Four Noble Truth, of which the first is concerned with suffering. Pain that you feel is not a conceptual product. Therefore practice of Buddhism should start with studying pain you feel. In doing that, you would better put aside the judgement of whether suffering is 'good or bad'. 'That you experience suffering and feel pain' is not so much concept as truth. This truth is the starting point of your journey. If you would stick to this approach all the time, pursuit of truth will be within your reach. This way, starting from the Right View and practicing precepts, concentration and wisdom according to the Path, you would be able to escape from craving, anger and delusion and to reach the truth at last.
