Attaining Truth, Goodness and Beauty in a Harmonious Way Through the Middle Path
Paragraph 12.7.1
Today I have felt compelled to raise the issue of truth, goodness and beauty because of my observation that the Western culture which has wielded enormous influence on us has largely been warped by craving, anger and delusion. As I said earlier, truth, goodness and beauty are wonderful values once they are achieved in a complete, sufficient and balanced way. But the reality is that too much emphasis is put on beauty and goodness. Blind pursuit of beauty has produced a market society based on ruthless and unlimited competition and pushed the mankind into that pit, where goodness and truth have lost their appeal. Indulgence in craving, anger and delusion stands in the way of a complete, sufficient and balanced pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty.

Paragraph 12.7.2
I would rather argue that it is directly accountable for causing suffering. Sadly we are deeply buried under an astonishing paradox, in which a remarkable value of beauty has caused such enormous adverse effects. How to overcome the conundrum? Any approach based on ideological faith would not help in solving real-life problems such as pollution, etc because a wonderful value of goodness may easily fall victim to extreme confrontation between good vs evil, thus causing adverse effects of ideology. It is no less than a nonsense which arises from belief, prejudice and bias. Tendency to see things in a conceptual and abstract manner rather than as it is lies behind it. This is called delusion.

Paragraph 12.7.3
All kinds of words such as nature, pollution and imperialism are products of conceptual exercise. In thinking, once started with concept, one can not but to resort to it till the end, which always leads to extremism. And the more biased towards extremism, the less likely a complete, sufficient and balanced achievement of good values. Truth, goodness and beauty individually have good values, but lack of harmony among them causes negative effects.

Paragraph 12.7.4
That is why the Buddha teaches the Middle Path as a way to cure our tendency to take to extremism. In suggesting the Middle Path, he refers to two opposite extremities of asceticism and hedonism as well as being and nothingness, and urges us to abandon them. This line of teaching has never happened outside Buddhism.

Paragraph 12.7.5
It is different from the Golden Mean, because this involves adjustment and moderation within existing viewpoints so as to avoid being too much as well being too little. It is tantamount to an art of life, a street wisdom to avoid excess and seek balance in daily life. In this sense, golden mean could also fall into the trap of the extremity of realism as well. That is due to the fact that to maintain the golden mean normally represents bias towards realism, the state of being. On the other hand, if you refuse to accept it, you could take to nothingness, another extremity. That way, you become immersed in and addicted to such concepts as emptiness, nothingness and illusion.

Paragraph 12.7.6
The same is true with concentration. It can also cause a dreadful consequence. The Buddha says that an extreme form of concentration is 'not beneficial'. In Buddhist viewpoint on cosmology, it refers to the Formless Realm, where time passes at a infinitely slow pace. So those whose mind stays there would take many kalpa to belatedly realize and become dissatisfied by the fact that 'it does not provide eternal liberation'. So Buddhism does not show any interest in the Formless Realm as yogis in India do. It does not wish to be reborn in the Form Realm either. Rather it attaches importance to the desire to be reborn as humans again and to transcend three realms of the Buddhist cosmology through the fourth stage of meditation of the Right Concentration according to the Path. This is the Middle Path.

Paragraph 12.7.7
It teaches the benefit of being reborn as humans and of reaching Nibbana through the practice of the Path, instead of getting lost in hells or heavens. A considerable slow elapse of time in heavens only contributes to prolonging time of the enlightenment till infinite time. What people born there can do is to defend and practice Buddhism well for the future, for which we express respect to heavenly gods, keepers of that worlds. This should not be our goal. Our ultimate task is to be reborn as humans, not as gandharva or heavenly gods, and to break the cycles of rebirth(samsara).

Paragraph 12.7.8
The Middle Path in Buddhism always excludes extremity of either way, two opposite poles between being and nothingness as well as suffering and happiness. Freedom from this extremity can be said to be the real value and objective of Buddhism. It is our duty to give a thoughtful consideration to the meaning of the 'Middle Path', and find a way to revitalize it as demands of our times. Lest we should become embroiled in whirlwinds and angry waves of the biased and harmful effects of the Western culture and lose a sense of our existence. Our efforts for revitalization therefore should start from correctly understanding the meaning of the word of middle in realistic terms. Otherwise the conceptualized Middle Path is feared of becoming another ideology and taking Buddhism to extremity.

Paragraph 12.7.9
In order to achieve truth, goodness and beauty in a sufficient and harmonious way, we need to practice the Middle Path so as to feel full confidence in understanding and expounding it to your family and friends.Alas, what happens now is that we tend to take the middle as something ambiguous, the necessary results of compromise and adjustment. Foolishly our society is wrapped under an overwhelmingly barren intellectual atmosphere, where extreme ideas prevail. Thus, the word of middle has become equated with being an opportunistic and fence-sitter value. Demand for clear-cut attitude is a fertile soil for egging perverted viewpoints on value, resulting in rigidity of thinking. Lack of flexibility in thinking is not conducive for revitalizing the Middle Path.

Paragraph 12.7.10
Let me emphasize again the need to look squarely at the fact that pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty ,taken individually in isolation, produces adverse effects of agitating craving, anger and delusion. The only way forward to overcome these three ills of mind is to practice precepts, concentration and wisdom, starting from the Right View of the Path, and to achieve truth, goodness and beauty in a balanced and harmonious manner. That road is the Middle Path.

Paragraph 12.7.11
Taking this opportunity, I would like to urge you to feel gratitude for the chances of meeting the Middle Path of Buddhism, and to develop a mental maturity to maintain a distance and tranquility in defiance of biased and extremist attitude of the society. Whatever criticism you may be subject to, you need to persevere with your tasks of reevaluating and rediscovering the Middle Path and of revitalizing it as our precious value.

Paragraph 12.7.12
One critical way of sharpening observation ability, strengthening power to focus mind and maintaining tranquility of mind in whatever circumstances is to sit on the floor with crossed legs. It takes you to the road of transcending time and space. You may have yet to reach that point, but you will continue your journey with a focus on it until that time comes. In due course that will definitely happen. This is what the Buddha teaches us.

Paragraph 12.7.13
In showing that ultimate goal, he kindly introduces to us a practical method of practice. One thing which never fails to happen to everyone is breathing. The canon teaches us to observe that 'I breathe in long and breathe out long', and that 'I breathe in short and breathe out short'. You need to take exercise in trying to remain focused on observing the length of breath and see it as it is, without trying to manipulate it. This ability to see the length of breathing as it is sows seeds for wisdom, while that of maintaining the continued focus on breath, not deviating from it, leads to concentration. Your journey should start with that and continue until precepts, concentration and wisdom are completely and properly practiced, and truth, goodness and beauty are achieved in a sufficient and harmonious way.
