The Treasure of the Sangha
Paragraph 13.4.1
What is the Treasure of the Sangha, or monastic order? Seen from the viewpoints on the Buddha and the Dhamma, not all monks belong to the Sangha. Renunciating householder life alone does not automatically accord monkship. They can be candidates. Therefore the Sangha should be the group of real monks, not candidates.

Paragraph 13.4.2
These days monkship is even considered as a profession, and the title of priesthood is given without hesitation. What is priesthood? It is a religious job, which carries out a religious duty. The concept of duty involves a given responsibility and institutional reward for it. Then priests are understood as someone in uniform who carry out religious job and get paid for their service from the organization.

Paragraph 13.4.3
From the beginning, Buddhist monks were not considered as priests, and they did not wear uniforms. Monks at that time were expected to wear clothes in a way to minimize the damage to the world. In India they collected fabrics used for wrapping corpses to be burned, and used them after washing and dyeing with red clay. They were the least damaging because they were useless and were to be discarded anyway. Clothes made from such fabrics could not have represented authority. Those who go forth have nothing to do with dignity and authority. Those things belong to the business of the worldly affairs. In this context, we do find clear reasons not to call Buddhist monks as priests.

Paragraph 13.4.4
For food likewise, monks were mendicants on the street. They dreamed of living truth-seeking lives and of dying on the streets or as prey of tigers in mountains. That was how they lived. In short, Buddhist monks are non-professional and therefore non-priests. If you happen to be of the view that Buddhism is a religion with the Buddha as god, that monks are priests, and that temples are religious sites where you go for praying when in difficulties, you got totally lost.

Paragraph 13.4.5
That does not mean that I do not understand the religious necessity for you to turn to seek relief from hardship of daily lives in Buddhism. Wars or chaotic and tumultuous times tend to usher in pioneers and spiritual leaders who care about peoples' agony and guide them out of their troubles. Then when people become comfortable with their daily lives, they lose a sincere interest in spiritual things. They become more secularized and materialistic. Their materialistic pursuit, then, leads to influence in their attitude towards monks, spoiling relations between monks and people. This kind of development creates an unhealthy environment for serious truth-seekers. Under this atmosphere, monks are transformed from truth-seekers into religious men.

What is the meaning of the Sangha? The Sangha is the group of monks who adopt the Dhamma as its central tenet and practice it as instructed. This group needs to practice the Buddha's Dhamma, treading a path in a journey to reach the final goal of gaining enlightenment.

For that monks need to leave worldly life to begin with, without which they could not get away from trivial affairs and realize a higher world that the big mind seeks to create. Worldly life requires constant and tiring effort and care to maintain the family, including the education of children. For someone trapped in this kind of situation, ideas of the big mind, liberation and Nibbana, must sound hollow.

Paragraph 13.4.9
To maintain the Sangha properly also requires adequate social conditions. The Great Tang Records on the Western Regions written by a Chinese monk illustrates the vibrant Sangha in the Western and Central Asia at that time. In some places monks were said to outnumber inhabitants, putting a tremendous burden on the society which lived off farming and ranching. This shows that social and economic conditions should be ripe for the Three Treasures to prosper in a harmonious way.

During the Goryeo Dynasty in Middle-age Korea in which Buddhism saw a full blossoming, things turned negative. The Sangha gradually became part of the ruling class and amassed disproportionately large fortune, thus attracting an ever-larger number of new entrants with an eye for material benefits. This warped life of the Sangha unavoidably led to social and political criticism and push-back. It spoiled the reputation of the Sangha.

Paragraph 13.4.11
The situation of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea which replaced the previous dynasty was not favorable either, because family-oriented Confucianism became the political and social ideology. Buddhist moral precepts could not reconcile themselves with the strict family-oriented Confucian ideology of the society to which Joseon noblemen were bound. The dynasty succeeded in skilfully wrapping the society with the ideology of familism and in gluing people to it. Under this kind of overwhelming situation, people found it daunting to leave family life and to enter the Sangha. In fact Neo-Confucianism性理學 and Yangmingism陽明學 were the products of compromise between Buddhism and Confucianism which encourage people to adopt the Buddhist thinking and ideal but within the framework of family life and to live as classical scholar.

This unfavorable situation continues even these days. Social conditions and family relations deter any thoughts of encouraging renunciation. Making matters worse, intellectually able elites are drawn into social and economic demands above all else. For 2,500 years social conditions have not been that conducive for the Sangha to assume a status as treasure.

But a demographic transition has begun amid technological advancement, which causes the replacement of human labor with machines, resulting in an abundance of surplus labor and in the professionalization of labor skills. With further progress in Artificial Intelligence we expect to see an increase in the numbers of unemployed people. This tremendous and drastic change in demography and labor market will pose one of the most challenging problems to human beings on the level of societies and nations as well as to individuals. We need to think about a new paradigm in the relationship between humans and labor. Up until now we have not yet reached a point on what kind of meaning to accord to human life with abundant time on hand.

Paragraph 13.4.16
We now have come to a time when we must change our view on the purpose of human life obsessed with economic survival and caring for family. Animals can, in a sense, do better job of raising offspring. Human beings, who are intrinsically inseparable from suffering, cannot avoid going through unpleasant experiences in life from time to time, making them mature in the process. But decades of suffering in this world are enough, aren’t they? These days human life expectancy has increased to the extent that healthy people can live for 120 years. Ancient India developed a tradition in which the life of people was divided into four stages ; For the first two stages young males stayed at home, taking care of families, and then for the last stages they lived in mountains or on the streets. When young, people went through worldly pains, and when old, they sought a refuge from such suffering. Enjoying liberation and Nibbana was thought to represent the true face of human beings. In this context, the above-mentioned societal change might be working to create an environment to enable a pursuit of such an idealistic life pattern. Now all indications are signaling that such an auspicious time is approaching for the human beings to aspire for really virtuous and valuable lives.

For that to happen, attachment to material well-being should also be whittled down. In fact, material wealth is the most destructive element for people. When people become rich, they tend to be ego-centric, deceitful, vain and belittling of others. Caught in a bonfire of lust, they are consumed by endless efforts to maximize material gains. This is the degenerating quality of material abundance, and people should be aware of the danger.

But what will happen to the Sangha which will prosper with numerous newcomers in the future? Learning from the lessons of history, the most serious problem is the rise of the caste system of the Sangha. In India that happened; China and Korea also have witnessed such trends in which the Sangha has been transformed into professional religious groups in charge of religious ceremonies. And the Sangha should not become a group of monks involved in special techniques such as meditation instruction. This raises another concern about the health of the Sangha. Once monks take interest in special skills, they will be tempted to sell their skills, thus inflaming lust for fame and wealth. The Sangha will lose its mandate and become special-interest groups. In order to keep the Sangha in a healthy mode, any interest in monopoly of the Dhamma, stratification of monks, and specialization of techniques should be shunned altogether.
