The Idea of Time and Suffering of Today
Paragraph 14.4.1
The issue is that the nature of suffering of today comes from the dominance of the European idea of time. The general circumstances are the same with the Chinese people with their own idea of time. In fact, the European idea of time is unique influenced by the Jewish culture and it has had influence on religion and science. In European classical science, time is the extension of space. The term ‘four dimensions’ is also used. One-two-three dimensions are the conception of the Euclid’s space. A bulk consists of points, lines, and heights. This is a three dimensional space to which time is introduced to form time-space or space-time. Thus time has actuality like space. Newton applied ‘absolute time’ to this. Time is treated as the extension of space, that is, time is grasped as advancing straight.

Paragraph 14.4.2
Not only Newton but Darwin joined in viewing time this way. According to Darwin’s theory of evolution protein was synthesized out of inorganic substance, which is the origin of life. In the theory of evolution, except the presence of God in the beginning of the world, the idea of time is the same as the European idea of time. In some process of material transmutation, life begins and then all species derived thereof evolve straight. In sum, in the Christian idea of time, time begun by God proceed toward the end, while Darwin saw life originate in inorganic substance and undergo the process of evolution. At the summit of evolution, stand human beings. The European idea of time is the same as that of creationism except the existence of God. In the field of education in America, there is a serious chasm as to which is right, the theory of evolution or the theory of creation.

Paragraph 14.4.3
In fact, the theory of evolution is coarse in explaining the evolution of human beings, who are, in the theory, nothing but ‘hairless apes’. There is a book en-titled ‘Hairless Apes’ in the West. I wonder if human beings are satisfied with the fact that they are ‘hairless apes’. The fact that the theory of evolution rejects the theory of creation with scientific grounds doesn’t mean that the evolutionists have done what has to be done. This does not mean that intellectuals have done their duty. There lies also the European idea of time at the basis of this situation. The Western understanding of human race does not rise above the theory of evolution and the theory of creation. That the third way of the understanding of human race cannot be found in these theories reveals the limits of the Western idea of time.

Paragraph 14.4.4
As was described above, time is the object of tension, and that of uneasiness and anxiety near collapse to the Western people. In addition, without a proper preparation for death, time itself is the uneasiness of human existence. In the Western philosophy, time is not the object of idea; it is connected wretchedly with the human uneasiness. Kierkegaard is a brilliant philosopher of religion. It is not an accident that he started his philosophical life with agony in a deep and desperate anxiety. It is probably due to the Jewish idea of time at work deep in his consciousness. Among the contemplations of suffering are anxiety, grief, agony, concern, and anguish. Of them anguish is the Chinese translation of a Pali word upayasa. It does not mean despair. But it means despair in English translation: despair, desperation. Owing to the difference of the ideas of time, the attitude toward suffering of the West is wide apart from that of Buddhism. Buddhism takes any suffering as opportunities for the elevation of character in the phase of rein-carnation.

Paragraph 14.4.5
That the Western idea of time holds sway over human beings brings about seri-ous problems. The global village is surrounded with the deep-rooted anxiety of the West and we are bound by its grasp upon us. The Western idea of time have spread over the world and cover our eyes of judgement with a bias influenced by it. We are exposed to the Western idea of time so much that we are steeped in it and the anxiety over existence. This defines the nature of suffering which human beings experience today.

Paragraph 14.4.6
Previously human beings had been so long attached to the state of being alive. When they experienced a conspicuous suffering, they were agonized and worried and tried to avoid it saying “This damned suffering has come again. It is very severe this time. How can I evade it?” Then time elapsed and they thought the suffering was fortunately over, and everything was restored normalcy. In other words, they tried to turn the suffering of existence into a temporary suffering. They had been living through sufferings with such an endeavor admitted. Comparatively the source of sufferings of today originates in the transiency of existence; that is, the guarantee of permanent existence is impossible. So the nature of sufferings of today is quite different from that of the past.

Paragraph 14.4.7
Their tension caused by time makes them conscious of limitedness of their life, so that they should make the most of time, and use time most efficiently. You are becoming the slaves of time. Time is money and the way how to increase the productivity in a unit time becomes the measure of a developing society. The moderns are always incapable of escaping neurosis and stress sunk into them.

Paragraph 14.4.8
Time is limited, moving toward the end; so when a great war breaks out, their fear is amplified like “After all, do we have come to a sad end? or Isn’t this the end of the global village? or Our existence has come to an end?” This is our suf-fering, which is serious. Because we are likely to connect one minor problem with a whole and structural denouement. This attitude to suffering takes us nowhere without any way to escape it. The way of thinking that time has an end leads us to where we are. We are accustomed to accepting suffering in terms of the Western idea of time with the result that we are easily entangled in a whirlpool of the idea of the ‘whole catastrophe’. When we greeted not long ago the new millenium, which idea haunted our minds, the hopefulness of the new millenium or the fear or horror of the great ruin the new millenium might bring?

Paragraph 14.4.9
Generally people take the great ruin for granted but in fact it is not a matter of course. It is only a tradition of the Western culture; still more, not a universal truth. And, furthermore, as the case of the warming of the earth proves, our ways of thinking and life and our attitudes form our state of affairs and environment. It actually is not easy to imagine suffering which is more terrible than the problem of environment. In short, the problem of suffering differs in its nature according as one chooses which ideas of time, Western or Buddhist.
