The Double Pillars of the Dhamma and the Way
Paragraph 3.10.1
The Double Pillars of the Dhamma and the Way
The special structure of the Four Noble Truths is evident in concert between the first and the second half. The beginning and the end of the Four Noble Truths act as the two supporting pillars. This is not any personal interpretation, but is stated in the very verse in The Sutta Nipata (III.12). In the Sutta of Two Observations, it is stated that "We have to see the Four Noble Truths in two ways: one is a duality of Suffering and the Cause of Suffering, and the other is the Cessation of Suffering and the Path to the Cessation of Suffering." The central point in both aspects is the Noble Truth of the Cause of Suffering and the Noble Truth of the Path to the Cessation of Suffering respectively. Suffering and the Cessation of Suffering is about an experiential world, while the dependent origination and the Noble Eightfold Path are about the path to a certain world. We find ourselves already in the sea of suffering without even trying. Therefore, two things we have to do are how to correctly recognize our situation in order to escape from this sea of suffering, and how then to try to accomplish our escape based on this awareness. The answer to these two problems was given by the Buddha through the dependent origination and the Noble Eightfold Path. Ultimately, although the teaching of the Buddha may be understood as the Four Noble Truths, the heart of these two pillars is, namely, the dependent origination and the Noble Eightfold Path.

Paragraph 3.10.2
When we examine the Buddha's words carefully, we can see that the words 'Dhamma' and 'the way' come up together often. Among the Pāli five nikayas, the Saṃyutta Nikāya is especially known for the short episodes which show the Buddha preaching during his lifetime in most realistic and vivid depictions. In this Sutta, for example, is found a saying "I have acquired the knowledge of the Dhamma and I have achieved the way." What does this mean? Why did he not preach Dhamma on its own but also the Way at the same time? Here lies the structural charm of the Buddha's teaching.

Paragraph 3.10.3
The dependent origination is the Dhamma, the Dhamma one soon needs to know. Each entry in the dependent origination is made of words to explain suffering. When the Buddha spoke of the dependent origination, he meant "you will come to know the cause of suffering by understanding the various concepts of the dependent origination along the way to enlightenment." Since these are the language of the Buddha’s wisdom, do not try to understand them through consciousness, but to realize their true underlying meaning. As we strive to learn, the dependent origination will reveal its meaning little by little, and our study will progress further as we gradually understand the dependent origination.

Paragraph 3.10.4
On the other hand, the Way, or the Noble Eightfold Path, has to be acquired and accomplished. This is because the Way is the means of reaching nirvana through practices. Therefore, "acquiring the knowledge of the Dhamma and achieving the Way," is a summary of what it means to study the Four Noble Truths. "To acquire the knowledge of the dependent origination and achieving the Noble Eightfold Path" are the two pillars of Buddhist study, and the sum total of "all we have to do."

Paragraph 3.10.5
The surprising thing about the system of the Four Noble Truths is the fact that the Dhamma and the Way are interconnected. Since there is ignorance, the dependent origination develops. When there is no ignorance, the dependent origination also ceases to be. The struggle to remove the ignorance is the purpose of the Noble Eightfold Path.

Paragraph 3.10.6
More specifically, we can see that the reverse order of the dependent origination is directly connected to the Noble Eightfold Path. If we do not want to be reborn in this body and be stuck in the cycles, we should not have attachments. If we do not wish to be swayed by attachments, we should not cling to excessive fondness. If we are not to have craving, we should not be possessed by the feeling of liking and disliking. If we do not wish to be swayed by the liking and disliking, we should not be distracted by things. If we are not be distracted, we have to take heed of the six entrances. We could sum up the points so far as the right thought, right speech, right action, and right livelihood in the Noble Eightfold Path.

Paragraph 3.10.7
Furthermore if we push on with the power of right effort and right mindfulness, name and form finally disappear, consciousness ceases, volitional formations subsides and ignorance is shattered. In terms of the Noble Eightfold Path, right view is reached through right mindfulness and right concentration. The dependent origination and the Noble Eightfold Path are not only in agreement, but are one and the same.

Paragraph 3.10.8
As explained above, with the Dhamma and the Way acting as two bridges, the structure that explains all of suffering of this mundane world and of emancipation is the Four Noble Truths. Is this not incredibly precise and ingenious? It is the teaching of miraculous wisdom. The Four Noble Truths is so exquisitely and perfectly structured. It is because the Buddha's Dhamma is so perfectly constructed that the Buddha said himself, "Good at the beginning, good in the middle, good at the end." Thanks to this, we can see the light even through this pitch-black darkness and feel the touch of the Buddha's hand reaching out to help raise the fallen.

Paragraph 3.10.9
Thus we can witness the structural beauty of the Four Noble Truths in many ways, and realize how exquisitely the Four Noble Truths are formed. Each of the truths makes a unique and significant contribution of its own for its unique position, and together they form the foundation of the very great teaching, which is Buddhism.

Paragraph 3.10.10
When we look at the two pillars of the Four Noble Truths, we can see that Buddhism is a system that combines both the Dhamma and the Way, both awareness and practice. To know the Dhamma, and to attain the Way, that is the quintessence of Buddhism. The fact that the Four Noble Truths, the foundation of Buddhism, is woven with the Dhamma and the Way clearly proves that this is a system which is totally foreign to blind faith.

Paragraph 3.10.11
In early Buddhism, it is unclear whether there was even a term for the word 'faith'. The word 'saddhā' is translated into 'faith' in English, but do these words refer to a religious belief? No. Saddhā has no relation to what is meant by 'religious belief.' Its original meaning was closer to that of 'rational assurance' in the sense of "something which has been examined by oneself and finally become an unwavering belief."

Paragraph 3.10.12
Seen in that light, it is clear that Buddhism is not a system of faith. When one sees how Buddhism tries to teach us why the world is defined by suffering and how we can escape from it, we can see what a logical and intellectual system it is and how it recognizes and treats people as intellectual beings capable of understanding, following, and attaining nirvana. Twenty five hundred years ago is a distant past, when humankind was still in the dark, struggling to form decent societies, distinct from animals. Considering that the Buddha built a system of logic related to wisdom through the Four Noble Truths in such ancient times, we cannot help but wonder whether we are doing it right to use our intellect in this era.
