What Is Money Seen Through the Law of Dependent Origination in Twelve Links?
Paragraph 5.4.1
What is Money Seen through the Law of Dependent Origination?
Let us think about money, for example. In the past, grain was the medium of exchange like money. Then people used bolts of cloth, iron, and copper coins as money. Gold functioned as money and was replaced by paper currency. Paper currency was first a convertible note, and later turned into an inconvertible note. Nothing more than a piece of paper, vouched by the government becomes money.

Paragraph 5.4.2
Let us first think about how money exists for us. First of all, money exists as a concept, and secondly it materially exists. When we think of money, we first think of the concept of money. “Money is a good thing!” “Money can buy anything!” “The more money, the better!” Such concepts come to our minds when we think of money.

Paragraph 5.4.3
With such thoughts in our minds, we no longer think of money as a mere sheet of paper. Money laden with such concepts is indeed powerful. Money is paper, just a sheet of printed paper, but we give our devotion and loyalty to money much more than any other objects in the world.

Paragraph 5.4.4
How can we describe money in Buddhist terms? I'd like to describe it as name and form: the fourth article in the Law of Twelve Dependent Origination. The Buddha said, "from ignorance arises activity, and from activity arises consciousness. Consciousness gives rise to name and form." In general, name and form are interpreted as representing the the spiritual world and the material world. According to some other interpretations, they mean the spirit and the body. As human beings are comprised of the spirit and the body, name and form refer to human beings themselves.

Paragraph 5.4.5
Those who interpret ‘name and form’ as human beings follow the traditional theory of twofold causality in the past, present, and future. The theory of twofold causality in the past, present, and future offers a highly effective and simple interpretation of reincarnation based on the law of dependent origination. However, I do not think the law of dependent origination is only for the purpose of explaining reincarnation; it is for the purpose of explaining everything that is in the process of birth and death.

Paragraph 5.4.6
The root cause of all sufferings is attachment. Moreover, the truth of the origin of suffering is for inquiring into the root causes of all phenomena. For this reason, I think that the Law of Dependent Origination in Twelve Links, as it describes the truth of the origin of suffering in specific terms, cannot be confined to the explanation of reincarnation. However, the law of dependent origination can explain all other realms we can imagine. I dare think that the Buddha taught the Law of Dependent Origination in Twelve Links for such purposes.

Paragraph 5.4.7
In this light, not only human beings, but money is also ‘name and form.’ Think about the power of scrap papers which enslave those who regard them as money. Where do you think the power of money comes from? Nothing other than the fact that money is ‘name and form.’ Our fixated ideas and stereotypes about money form a system of concepts: that is none other than ‘name.’ The printed sheet of paper before our eyes is called “form.” If money exists in form only, it is powerless. Because it exists as name and form, it could become powerful.

Paragraph 5.4.8
That which makes money into name-and-form is [sensual] consciousness. Because there is consciousness, name-and-form arises. Therefore, consciousness is its cause. We hold a set of conceptions about money because we have consciousness. It is the manipulation of consciousness. It is produced by consciousness. Conceptions are produced by the manipulation of consciousness; when consciousness turns toward money, the concept of money is created.

We are so very keen on money ultimately because of the name-and form' of money that is created by the manipulation of consciousness. Money is certainly one of the reasons why you are so busy in Seoul, but this money is not substance but name-and-form only, a product of consciousness!

Paragraph 5.4.10
I have so far applied the concept of ‘name-and-form’ in the Law of Dependent Origination in Twelve Links to our life. To understand things as name-and-form, and to regard the root causes of the origination of things and their disappearance as name-and-form, we should observe what comes before and after. If we discipline ourselves to confront our problems by observing what comes before and after name-and-form in the context of the law of dependent origination, we will be able to obtain the key to the Four Noble Truths, the highest level of the Buddha’s teachings.

Paragraph 5.4.11
Have you heard much about the concept of no-self(anatta)? No-self has no other special meanings than that "all myriad things come into being through dependent origination, which, in other words, means anatta, no-self. That is, no unchanging substance exists by itself, but what exists is the product of dependent origination. This, in a word, is no-self.

Paragraph 5.4.12
During the time of the Buddha, the concept of immortal self was extremely strong in Brahman society. For this reason, the Buddha used the term of anatta, no-self. To be more specific, it means the process of dependent origination: to arise through dependent origination and to perish through dependent origination. This means that only the process exists. There is a saying. “Human beings do not exist; there is only the process of becoming human beings. In other words, only the process of being born, living, and dying exists.

Paragraph 5.4.13
Money is also the same. Money does not exist as an unchanging entity. Money is a financial concept, produced by the act of consciousness; in other words, it is nothing other than form attached to name. For this reason, people are not able to treat money as a sheep of paper; they worship money and become attached to it. Because they are being attached, the process of suffering in various ways unfolds. Therefore, when that process ceases, money also disappears. This is what is meant by being arising through dependent origination and perishing through dependent origination. Therefore, money has no self and without substance.

"Why say nothing exists? Obviously a person exists, and so does money." You might ask. You are still unable to see the process, for which you are still tied to phenomena. For this reason, the Law of Dependent Origination cannot be understood. This is why Buddhist thought has eschewed the Law of Dependent Origination and wandered off to other directions.

The Four Noble Truths, the highest level of the Buddha's teachings, are based on the Law of Dependent Origination in Twelve Links. We should pay heed to this fact. Even if we cannot understand the Law of Dependent Origination, instead of being lured into bypassing it, we should tried to understand it by applying it to your own lives. Then we will be able to form a correct understanding of things based on the Four Noble Truths. We should develop the habit of inquiring into and resolving the root causes of our problems in our daily lives. That I think will be the most honest and sincere method of practising Buddhism.
