The Field of Good Fortune

Paragraph 5.6.1 복의 밭 불교에 복전福田이라는 말이 있습니다. 복전은 ‘복 밭’이라는 말입니다. 그러면 복 농사를 제대로 지을 수 있는 복의 밭은 무엇일까요? 그것은 복의 씨를 뿌릴 수 있고 그것을 능히 키워낼 수 있는 밭, 바로 삼보三寶입니다. 부처님[佛]과 부처님의 법[法]과 부처님의 법을 실천 수행하는 승가[僧], 이 세 가지가 복 밭입니다. The Field of Good Fortune In Buddhism we speak of the field of good fortune. The field of good fortune literally means the field where you yield good fortune. Then what would be the field in which we can properly farm good fortune? That is the Three Treasures, the field where you can plant seeds and grow good fortune. The Buddha, the Dhamma (Dharma), and the Sangha. These three are the field of good fortune.

Paragraph 5.6.2 여기서 승僧은 중이 아닙니다. 중다운 중이라야 승입니다. 삼보에 들어가는 승, 곧 승보僧寶라는 말이지요. ‘보물 보寶’ 자가 붙은 승보라는 막중한 존재가 되기 위해서는 일정 수준 이상이 되어야 합니다. 경에 보면 ‘사향사과四向四果1에 들어선 사람들, 즉 사쌍팔배四雙八輩의 사람들이 승보다’라고 명시되어 있습니다. 적어도 예류과에 들어야 복전이라는 이야기입니다. The Sangha here does not mean simply the monks. To become part of the Sangha, the monk should become truly like a monk: a monk that enters into the Three Treasures. That is the Treasure of Monk! You should be above a certain level in order to become such an important being as the Treasure of Monk. In the Buddhist Sutras it is clearly written that those who entered into the Four Processes for the Four Results, that is, those who are called the Group of Eight and the Four Pairs, are the Sangha. To claim the land of good fortune, one should at least reach the stage of entering upon the stream (sotāpatti).2

Paragraph 5.6.3 그런데 이는 다른 종교에서 들으면 ‘아니, 자기들만 복전인가? 그럼 우리 하느님, 우리 신은 그럼 복전이 아닌가?’ 이렇게 주장할 수 있습니다. 그렇습니다. 불교가 배타적 독점권을 주장하는 것은 결코 아닙니다. Paragraph 5.6.4 불·법·승 삼보는 연기법과 불가분의 관계에 있습니다. 연기법을 깨달은 이가 부처요, 연기법을 설함이 법이요, 연기법을 알고 연기법에 따라서 생활하려고 노력하는 사람이 승이기 때문입니다. 이렇게 삼보를 연기법과 연관지어 볼 때, 복전은 바로 연기법입니다. 즉 연기법에 대한 이해와 연기법에 따라서 생활하는 태도, 그것이야말로 복전이라는 말씀입니다. The Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha are all inseparably related to the Law of Dependent Origination. The Buddha realized the Law of Dependent Origination; his teachings about the Law of Dependent Origination are the Dhamma; and those who try to lead their life in accordance with the Law of Dependent Origination are the Sangha. In relation to the Three Treasures, the field of good fortune is indeed the Law of Dependent Origination. In other words, the attitude of someone who understands with the Law of Dependent Origination and live accordingly is the field of good fortune.

Paragraph 5.6.5 이 점을 앞으로 불교 공부하는 동안 명심해야겠습니다. 복전인 연기법을 탐구해서 확신을 가지고 이 길을 나아가 진실로 복전을 일굴 수 있을 때까지 우리의 화두로 삼읍시다. Let us take it to heart as we continue to cultivate ourselves in Buddhism. Let us inquire into the Law of Dependent Origination and proceed onto this path with confirmation until the day we truly farm the field of good fortune; let us have it as our hwadu (話頭; kōan, 公案, in Zen Buddhism) of meditation.
