How to Sit
Paragraph 6.1.1
How to sit
Let us sit on the floor cross-legged. Those who feel uncomfortable with full cross-legged posture or full lotus posture may choose half or easy cross-legged one, which is done with one foot being put on top of the thigh of the other side. People with short leg and stout thigh are specially advised to choose such a posture because full posture may cause pain to leg and pelvis.

Paragraph 6.1.2
The basic principle is to keep the back erect. The frame which constitutes the spine ridge connecting the tailbone and the end of the hipbone is called the spinal column. You should try to keep this spinal column erect, perpendicular to the floor. While the forward-tilted upper body usually leads to the stomach caving in, sitting with the erect spinal column produces a feeling of stability and relaxation.

Paragraph 6.1.3
The need to keep the straight spinal column can not be overemphasized. Dozing off or feeling anxiety naturally causes the column to lose its balance. Sitting straight up, one may avoid being distracted by idle worry. The sculpture of the Thinker by Rodin epitomizes the image of a person who is overwhelmed by all kinds of worry. Those with stooped postures must indicate the states of mind embroiled in worry, idle thoughts or dozing off. A superficial similarity of postures between the Pensive Bodhisattva and the Pensive Thinker may cause confusion about the fact that Bodhisattva's posture reflects the deep and correct absorption of mind.

Paragraph 6.1.4
The erect spinal column guarantees a correct set-up of the upper body and a smooth breathing. People tend to sit tilting one side or another, which can be corrected by a simple preparation. After first extending both arms backwards on the floor and holding the hands, lower the forehead to the floor. Then raise the upper body slowly without moving the tailbone. That way you become accustomed to the correct posture.

Paragraph 6.1.5
Beginners should take a special care to develop the right posture from the beginning. But if your body condition does not allow that, just try to maintain your posture approximate to the ideal one, which I mentioned before. What is important is to sit feeling relaxed, comfortable and effortless.

Paragraph 6.1.6
Now fold both hands and lay them in front close to the stomach as comfortably as possible. Then let thumbs of both hands touch each other with a feeling of sustaining the upper body in a balanced manner. That will be helpful in balancing the body and sitting on the floor for an extended period of time through unobstructed flow of energy of the right and left.

Paragraph 6.1.7
If you feel confident of the right posture being achieved, then proceed, without moving the body, to check whether any part of the body is under undue strain or tension. Try to relax your body from the head to the toes as much as possible. Any strain detected means the state of being unnatural, which could result in illness. Be aware of the danger that strain accumulated in any part of the body easily causes illness. Since your meditation is a life-long venture, rather than a temporary experiment, you would better develop a good habit of relaxing your whole body and maintaining the right posture. To be sure, this is the most difficult huddle to the beginners.

Paragraph 6.1.8
Next, try to tuck in your chin slightly instead of setting your sights upward, which is a usual but not preferable practice. By doing that, your posture is maintained in such a way as for the crown top of your head to point to the sky. Special efforts should not be spared on putting the tongue. Try to roll and press it against the roof of the mouth, which can be easily done through training.

Paragraph 6.1.9
The last part concerns managing eyes. Efforts to achieve meditative absorption unwittingly puts a lot of stress on eyes, leading to substantial weariness. As a way to relax your eyes, you could close them. But it tends to cause dozing. There is a certainly trade-off between opened eyes and closed eyes. To avoid that conundrum, I would like to recommend you to open eyes half. It is not to close eyes nor to open them. Since open eyes put external objects within sights, half open eyes could help to suppress dozing off as well as to avoid distraction from external objects. Just lay half open eyes absent-mindedly one or two meters in front without fixing them on any objects and seeing anything. If you could manage not to doze off, you may close your eyes as well.

Since beginners tend to lack flexibility of body, they choose to have training of yoga at lecture halls선방. It is a recommendable preparation for beginners to develop a good posture so as to avoid strain through strengthened flexibility of their bodies. If you are ready, then let us sit for an hour.
