To Experience the Whole Body Means the Middle Path
Paragraph 6.7.1
To experience the whole body is the Middle Path
For example, let us talk about the Koan meditation. The koan, which has been used in the Korean tradition of Zen meditation, is no more than abstract concept. Koan can not escape from the influence of perception, sanna in Pali, since it necessarily is accompanied by perception. It functions by objectifying and perceiving matters, whether it be the subject of contemplation or whether it be the subject of thinking. It simply happens unwittingly.

Paragraph 6.7.2
What is wrong with that? First of all, its target becomes tremendously large, extending infinitely outwards to the extent that a whole universe can be covered. This way you may feel exciting, but in reality you are completely distracted by outside matters. Because of this kind of danger, respectable monks must have felt it necessary to admonish trainees against play with perception. On the contrary, if you would focus your mind on any part of the body, it would be helpful for meditative absorption. But its subject would become too narrow.

Paragraph 6.7.3
But the Buddha teaches the whole body, which is small compared to the outside world but larger than its part. Therefore, as in the case of sitting on the floor, to experience the whole body is the Middle Path as well. In such a way these functioning of sanna is suppressed.

Paragraph 6.7.4
After all, the Middle Path means to observe the thing as it is. This can be easier said than done, because sanna is our normal perception rather than seeing as it is. Let say, there is a bowl. The word of bowl contains certain kinds of concept such as water in water bowl, expensive italian bowl, sanitary glass bowl, etc. Like this we are accustomed to seeing the bowl based on concept and past information, making it impossible to see it as it is. After all, the word of bowl is given by us, not by itself.

Paragraph 6.7.5
This way we fail to see it as it is, and instead depend upon name and concept as conveniently, wilfully and subjectively as are pleased. In order to see it as it is, and even to the extent of overcoming the scientific objectivity, we should drop our existing habit of seeing. We train ourself to watch things in the middle way so as to be able to develop capacity of seeing as it is without the intervention of any subjective judgements, which can be done by identifying and excluding each of such habits.

Paragraph 6.7.6
To perceive is to use imagination. To see external things is also done through imagination. Perception itself is no more than imagination. When we perceive something, we mobilize past experiences and know it conceptually. Like this, perception is the process to be realized by intervention of past memory. In conclusion, true seeing, which is perception based on real wisdom, will be possible only when recalling of such past experiences, expectation about future and speculation on external things are discarded altogether.

Paragraph 6.7.7
Everything should be confirmed through experience, rather than through relying on imagination. Buddhist training should not be based on imagination. While study in the secular world is made through imagination, training in Buddhism should overcome the level of imagination. It should not be the playground of perception and consciousness. For instance, my feeling sick is the fact which happens now and here and therefore does not need past memory. But if one of you are sick, I can not feel it and therefore can not but depend upon imagination based on past experiences.

Paragraph 6.7.8
Since my body does not need imagination, we need to mobilize and use the whole body which we can confirm as it is. This is the Middle Path, not narrow but not large either. To experience the whole body means not to deviate from it as well as not to be immersed in its part. I do believe that this is the basic position of Buddhism.

Paragraph 6.7.9
Contemplation of impurities of the body has something to do with it. From the top of the head, hair, skin, flesh, bone, excreta, urine to the toenails, all of these 32 are part of the body which can be confirmed without intervention of imagination. We simply contemplate them. Not deviate from them, but not focus on any part of them, either. This is the Middle Path. Starting first with posture and finally to the object of contemplation, we continue to stick to the Middle Path and to move forward in a consistent manner. This is how to do training.

Paragraph 6.7.10
If I add one more thing, I would like to urge you that meditation training always be accompanied by loving-kindness meditation -metta, even five minutes before starting in earnest. This contemplation, free from sanna's logic, does not contribute to creating subjective judgement, causing no harm however long it may be done. In other words, it is not a kamma-creating act, accumulation of which distorts people's capacity to see as it is. In this context, loving-kindness meditation is also part of the training to see in the middle way.
