Efforts for a Complete Achievement of Precepts, Concentration and Wisdom Mean to Tread the Middle Path

Paragraph 7.11.1 그러나 계만 공부한다고 청정함이 완성되지는 않습니다. 어느 정도는 닦이지만 좀 더 깊이 완벽하게 닦으려면 정이 필요하고 혜가 필요합니다. 그래서 삼학을 구족해야 계도 되고 정도 되고 혜도 됩니다. It is noteworthy, however, that practice of precepts alone would not lead to accomplishment of purity. This imperfect state needs backup from practices of concentration and wisdom. It stands to illustrate the necessity of completion of these three practices.

Paragraph 7.11.2 그렇게 구족한 것이 중도입니다. 중도를 벗어나서 뭔가 하나만 붙들면 시작은 되지만 완성은 안 됩니다. 그래서 계·정·혜를 구족하는 번거로움을 감수해야 합니다. 어렵지만 그렇게 하지 않을 수가 없어요. 부처님 최초의 말씀이 중도인데, 계·정·혜가 구족되지 않고 어떻게 어느 하나만으로 중도를 이루겠습니까. Efforts at completing three practices mean treading the Middle Path. Otherwise, one can embark on a journey but could never finish it. However difficult and inconvenient it could be, completion of three practices is a must. The fact that the first word in the Buddha's teachings is about the Middle Path proves the point on the necessity of completing three practices in walking the Middle Path.

Paragraph 7.11.3 계는 청정함이요, 정은 고요함이고, 혜는 밝음입니다. 청정하고 고요하고 밝은 세 가지 덕을 구족한 것이 중도입니다. 이 삼덕이 서로가 서로를 보완하고 서로가 서로를 밀어서 어느 하나도 빠지려야 빠질 수 없고 모가 나려야 날 수 없이 원만해질 때 그것이 중도입니다. 어중간하게 타협하는 태도가 중도는 아닙니다. 불교는 그렇게 적극적입니다. Precepts is concerned with purity, while concentration with tranquility as well as wisdom with brightness. Being replete with three virtues of purity, tranquility and brightness means the Middle Path. This should be understood as a state where these elements form a complementary and supportive partnership among themselves, thus guaranteeing comprehensiveness. An ambiguous attitude to make compromises, by opting some and excluding others, is not the Middle Path. This much Buddhism is positive.

Paragraph 7.11.4 구족하라. 뭘 구족하는가? 계·정·혜를 구족하라. 어떻게 구족하는가? 팔정도를 닦아라! 왜 팔정도를 닦아야 하는가? 십이연기十二緣起를 관하면 그 해답이 나옵니다. 그렇게 체계 정연하고 합리적입니다. The questions of what and why concerning three practices naturally beget the one of how to do. Treading the Noble Eightfold Path shows the way forward!And the answer to the reason behind it may be found in contemplating the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination. The Buddha's teachings are so systematic and logical.

Paragraph 7.11.5 그래서 사성제에서도 십이연기, 즉 집성제集聖諦가 멸성제滅聖諦, 도성제道聖諦의 앞에 나오지요. 왜 그런가? 이 세상이 고苦인데 왜 고인지 알아야 되거든요. 그렇게 해서 집성제를 알면, 팔정도를 왜 닦아야 되며 어떻게 닦아야 되는지 알 수 있습니다. 십이연기를 순관하면 고를 알고, 십이연기를 역관하면 멸滅을 알기 때문입니다. 고를 알고 멸을 알면 지금 이 공부가 고를 줄이고 멸을 이루어나가는 쪽으로 바로 가고 있는지, 잘못 가고 있는지 점검할 수 있어요. 십이연기에 따라서 자기 공부를 점검하면 내가 팔정도를 바르게 걷고 있는지 다 점검이 됩니다. In the Four Noble Truth, the Noble Truth of Arising of Suffering, which corresponds to the Dependent Origination, comes before the ones of Elimination of Suffering and of the Path. This structure is intended to explain why suffering arises. Knowledge of the Truth of Arising of Suffering naturally leads to understanding of why and how the Eightfold Path should be practiced. Contemplation of the Dependent Origination in sequence allows understanding of suffering, while the one done in reverse order opens up understanding of its elimination. Equipped with knowledge of both suffering and its elimination, one may check whether or not one's own study is headed towards lessening and eliminating suffering. In order words, self-reflection of one's own study, by employing the Dependent Origination, provides a correct guide on the right practice of the Eightfold Path.

Paragraph 7.11.6 이처럼 인류 역사에 전무후무한 대지혜의 큰 축이 사성제 안에 있습니다. 그것은 인류가 20세기에 완성한 원자폭탄보다 더 위력이 크고 어떠한 과학기술보다도 더 체계적이고 시공을 초월한 영원한 힘을 발휘합니다. 이렇게 큰 가르침을 우리가 내 것으로 만드는 날, 우리는 무명에서 헤어나는 것입니다. This eloquently illustrates the fact that the Four Noble Truth contains the main axis of great wisdom of all times in human history. And it may wield eternal power beyond time and space because it is more powerful than nuclear bombs made in the 20th century and more systematic than any other scientific and technological knowledges. When we exert efforts, therefore, to make this great teaching our own, we may be able to escape from ignorance.
