Resorting to the Right Mindfulness
Paragraph 7.12.1
It is often said that people usually tend to pay close attention to others rather than to themselves, thus being quick in pointing out other's faults and avarice, while failing to find out their own. This makes people constantly attribute their misfortunes to others and justify their failings. What a sad and sorry state! But at least while being in this place, you would better stop that attitude.

Paragraph 7.12.2
This place is the house of mirror, that is. You are here to clean the mirror and reflect on yourselves, and to be able to see you as it is. For instance, if you have someone to blame, there must be a good reason. But scrutinizing through the mirror, you would come to a conclusion that you actually provided certain backgrounds for someone's deeds and that you are simply making excuses for that. This is how self-rationalization and self-justification do work. Contemporaries, in particular those urbanites, are experts at that skill.

Paragraph 7.12.3
In this room, I urge you to take this opportunity to look into such habits so that you could realize how cunning and good at deceiving yourselves and others you are. This training at self reflection and transferring one's merit to others is the starting point of study of the mindfulness. Otherwise it can not so much be the right one as the wrong one.

Paragraph 7.12.4
Only those who practiced precepts may be able to have pure mind, which makes self-reflection fruitful at the stage of the right mindfulness. Initial efforts at the low level of moral judgement should be upgraded to those of in-depth observation and analysis of one self because of the necessity of ability to read one's mind better like in the material world where minute observation requires the assistance of microscope, etc.

Paragraph 7.12.5
This way, true face of mind, which is minute and vague, thus being susceptible to disguise and self-justification, could be revealed. Moral judgement alone could not do that work. The study of the right mindfulness works by objectifying oneself and making it as the target of observation as well as developing capacities to observe, in an unobstructed and harsh manner, oneself as its target by overcoming temptation of self-justification. To see as it is!

Paragraph 7.12.6
Such strenuous efforts provide, more than anything else, a benefit of good health with straight mind and posture. One should not remain complacent with that, though. What we really strive to achieve through the study of the mindfulness is to develop capacities to observe one's own mind and to sincerely maintain a continued focus of attention without deceiving oneself through outright dismissal and justification. Going one step further, admission of own faults fosters an attitude of trying to correct them without any excuses. For this, study of the right mindfulness is the most effective method.

Paragraph 7.12.7
Can you imagine what results study of meditative absorption, lacking the right mindfulness, would bring? The right mindfulness or Sati is really the special term the Buddha employs in a special manner. This term did not exist before the Buddha, whereas the term of Samadhi or concentration was already widely in use. Many people pursued practice of meditative absorption at that time. Then the Buddha exhorted 'to practice precepts and mindfulness before doing concentration'. He meant to convey his view that instead of going easy, one should exert efforts to look hard into oneself and 'to cultivate the field called mind'.
