How Not to Be Tricked by Desires
Paragraph 7.3.1
Why is it then imperative to have a correct understanding of the right mindfulness or Sati in doing Chamseon?Generally, starting with desires to attain techniques unwittingly and gradually snowballs into more desires down the road. As a result, the identity of the right Dhamma and Three Treasures of Buddhism become replaced by avarice. Some people at some level of experience in meditation are lured into claiming to be religious sect leaders, revealing true face of avarice. The Buddha is not the religious leader, and Buddhism is not the religion which requires a blind faith in the leader either. In a sense, religious leaders represent greedy persons at the highest level.

Paragraph 7.3.2
Avarice reveals itself in a much more subtle manner. Why people become greedy?I suppose that those people might have started with a good and lofty goal, but that as time passes, it unwittingly turned out that way. There must have been no other way. But original intentions, however good, can not be a good enough excuse. Mental training, without the right guide from the beginning, are highly likely to end up being lost in the process.

Paragraph 7.3.3
Good intentions, accordingly, should be executed by a gradual approach, that is, the right endeavor. The right endeavor does not necessarily require sleepless nights of sitting on the floor, defying bodily pain and lure of sleep, because it, even though laudable itself, could fall into mannerism as well. To avoid that kind of trap, strenuous efforts of self-reflection must be exerted in parallel.

Paragraph 7.3.4
Instructors of meditation could give useful tips. But a piece by piece understanding of their instructions - like each pearl itself does not make a necklace - do not produce useful results. Rather, they could become a source of stress, binding us.

Paragraph 7.3.5
There must be some among you who feel stress at the word of study. Those people, recalling uncomfortable memories of bodily pain, feel discouraged from pursuing further, or if they would decide to force themselves to continue, a lot of stress in that process sets in. But at that stage, people still maintain sincerity. As time passes, people could easily be deceived into feeling satisfaction with their level of study and lose momentum for further excercise. It illustrates tremendous difficulties of doing study.

Paragraph 7.3.6
As a matter of fact, various sorts of perceptual object occur in that process. Kept on being tricked by seeing some mental phenomena or gaining certain supernatural power, people claim to, or are perceived to, attain enlightenment. But later scrutiny reveals a complete deception. Faced with such deception and harmful obstructions, sincere and courageous trainees would rather discount such mental experiences as such and go back to the original attitude.

Paragraph 7.3.7
This problem becomes more serious when highly respected monks, who are believed to attain enlightenment, are involved. Lamenting lack of right courage and energy to tell the truth, they simply let the process of deception remain uncorrected and continue. Since the Dhamma is so strict not to allow personal consideration, such persons will all at once fall into an abyss of evil.

Paragraph 7.3.8
The reason why I mention about this is due to the fact that I have personally witnessed some cases nearby. I do not believe that they did it from the beginning. They must have started study at the beginning with sincerity and honesty. But unfortunately they ended up that way.

Paragraph 7.3.9
You should not treat it as something irrelevant to you. Initial steps are relatively easy and harmless, with mind focused on bodily conditions. As elderly people miss so much the youthful innocence, the same is true of study. As right endeavor results in making sitting on the floor comfortable, wakefulness starts to decrease. Overcoming such difficulties is followed by attacks of a wave of perceptual objects. This is not the end, and much more serious ones are on their way.

Paragraph 7.3.10
Various types of delusions and perceptual objects unwittingly enter. As a matter of fact, they reflect each one's mind. Personal desires, disguised as delusions, appear and cheat us. So do not ascribe them to anything else. They can take various forms, depending upon desires such as gaining supernatural power, seeing the Buddha, etc.

Paragraph 7.3.11
This world is in itself made of energy, and we are living within that enormous mass of energy. As in the case of people fiercely running after various secular things such as food and clothes, those with focused mind in meditation can also have a feeling of achieving desired effects.

Paragraph 7.3.12
Let us take an analogy of the layer of ozone. Since we are protected from destructive power of the sun by ozone layer, punctured holes in it would naturally endanger living things on earth. Likewise, layers of terrible desires shrouding us can not crush or destroy us because humans are protected by a sort of layer of shield. But if that shield is disabled and we are directly faced with a force from outside, disaster ensues immediately.

Paragraph 7.3.13
My warning could sound a little bit premature for you today. But the point is to highlight the importance of finding the right way from the start. I mention this because I hope that you, instead of seeking to experience a certain supernatural power, would rather pose a serious consideration to such basic questions of what is the right mindfulness or Sati, or of why we should practice Sati. In a word, even though you are beginners, I would like to urge you to earnestly try to contemplate how to follow the right Dhamma from the beginning.
