Scaling Mt. Everest Vs. Practicing Chamseon
Paragraph 7.5.1
Then why the Buddha has put the right mindfulness at the seventh place rather than at the beginning of the Eightfold Path?Let us think about it. Is it that the ordering in the Path represents a simple listing? Can it be ignored? Why the Buddha expounded on the Path in such a complicated manner?

Paragraph 7.5.2
We ignorant beings prefer not to use brains living in this complicated world. Why the Buddha, the most Benevolent One, did not give us a simple and clear teaching which we could easily and comfortably digest? There must be a good reason behind it.

Paragraph 7.5.3
Most of his audience were monks rather than secular public. In such cases, Canons usually started with his calling of monks. As a matter of fact, sermons on full-fledged study such as the right mindfulness and the Eightfold Path are targeted toward monks. And the scheme of the Path, with eight elements in order, is to ensure their safe and effective journey to the final destination. Considering this point, it is needless to say that a step by step approach in accordance with the Path is a prerequisite for secular people who would like to join the study of Buddhism, originally aimed at monks.

Paragraph 7.5.4
Ignoring this background, however, unrealistic desires have instigated them to seek study without paying enough heed to necessary preparation and dangers.

Paragraph 7.5.5
There is a parallel between study of the Dhamma and climbing Mt. Everest. As it is too well evident, climbing the highest mountain requires basic preparation such as gathering of useful information and advice from experienced hands as well as intensified exercise for mental and physical strength. Its deficiency definitely causes casualties and disasters. Likewise, this mental study, to be done in a unseeable world, has produced so many victims because people have failed to do necessary preparations.

Paragraph 7.5.6
Which do you think is greater between climbing Mt. Everest and attaining literation and enlightenment?Challenge for the great things calls for proper preparations. Once your mind is made up, you need to exert efforts to realize that dream. In this context, we need to examine why the right mindfulness is placed at the seventh place and what are the other elements placed before it.
