Starting With Borrowed Light
Paragraph 7.6.1
You must be familiar with the fact that the Eightfold Path can be summarized into three practices of precepts, concentration and wisdom. The right mindfulness belongs to concentration. Then it becomes clear that the right speech, the right behavior and the right livelihood as well as a part of the right endeavor should be positioned in the front within the framework of precepts. But they should be preceded by practice of wisdom including the right view and the right thought, with which to light up the precepts.

Paragraph 7.6.2
In a book, titled "Buddhism in daily life“ translated by the Calm Voice Society, it is explained that "the right view and the right thought are sort of wisdom which are at the basic level, rather than those at the highest level, but which should be practiced at the beginning. "In this light, the Eightfold Path is structured in such a way as to ensure that, among three practices of precepts, concentration and wisdom, 'basic wisdom should come first, to be followed by precepts, only after which true concentration can be achieved. 'In a word, to accept and practice the Dhamma correctly requires the ordering of wisdom, precepts and concentration in the practice of the Eightfold Path.

Paragraph 7.6.3
Needless to say, the wisdom at this stage is not so much the one gained through our own enlightenment as the one borrowed from the Buddha. He lighted up the Dhamma, and we borrow the light now. Enshrouded by darkness, we ourselves can not create the light to use. Before his appearance, there were only friar's lanterns to confuse people who at that time, therefore, could not borrow the light. Fortunately since the Buddha lighted up the lantern of the Dhamma, we could have moved forward relying upon his light. This is how wisdom- the right view and the right thought- in the Eightfold Path should be understood.

Paragraph 7.6.4
There should be no misunderstanding that wisdom in the Eightfold Path does not mean the one which we attain through enlightenment and rely on for our study. To use the right view and the right thought at the initial stage of our study means to borrow the Buddha's light of the Dhamma and to move forward roughly guessing the path. We read the canons to do that. The translation work of the canons by the Calm Voice Society is part of such efforts as well.

Paragraph 7.6.5
We need to light the path in front of us with the borrowed light. Ignoring this necessity, the Jogye Order in Korea has taken an attitude to put an lopsided emphasis on concentration and wisdom and to embark on serious practice too much prematurely by recommending not to read the canons. Instead of teaching how to resort to the borrowed light of the Dhamma to light up the path in front, it recommends to pursue study by covering the light. But standing disoriented by complete darkness, we can not possibly turn off the light of the Buddha's Dhamma, thus denying the role of his appearance. That is tantamount to wilfully going back to those dark days before the Buddha. Of course, environments at the time of appearance of Seon Buddhism in China contributed to such a situation. Conditions now, however, are completely different from those at that time and place. Therefore we should open the canons instead of closing them. When a glimmer of light is caught through gradual progress with the help of that borrowed light, we may be able to turn that off and move forward. From that stage rented light could cause troubles moving forward.

Paragraph 7.6.6
Our practice of Sati or the right mindfulness definitely necessitates at least borrowing of the right view and the right thought from the Buddha, as recommended by him through his 45 years of laborious ministry. Our listening to his teachings does not mean our complete reliance on him but means to borrow his light of the Dhamma, which is done through reading the canons because we can not hear the teachings in person from him. We should listen to his teachings so that we could have a sense of what to do and how to do for study in a beneficial manner.

Paragraph 7.6.7
With knowledge of the world and our relationship with it as well as our raison d'etre, we may be able to judge clearly intention and purpose for our own life according to the Buddha's teachings. This is all about the practice of the right view and the right thought.

Paragraph 7.6.8
That is, the right view should be established firmly before embarking on the practice of the right mindfulness. This is done within the framework of the Eightfold Path and three practice of precepts, concentration and wisdom. You are just about to start the study of the Buddha's teachings, which requires a correct approach - the right view - from the beginning. The right view enables the journey with the right understanding of the Eightfold Path.

Paragraph 7.6.9
Right now we are gathered to study the right mindfulness. If you are obsessed with making a quick result or are without any clear and resolute sense of purpose, you can not be said to practice the right mindfulness or Sati. Of course, one can not deny that there is certainly an iota of merit in pursuing the practice of Sati regardless of whether it being done in such an incorrect manner. Trying to do it occasionally as time allows also may bring accumulated benefit. But beginners would better remember they should pay a special attention to keeping the right view at a minimum.
