The Modern Implication of Five Precepts
Paragraph 9.4.1
I would like to take this opportunity to look at the Five Precepts in more depth. The first reaction of lay Buddhists attending the temple at the mention of the Five Precept is, 'I keep it well.' 'I did not steal because I did not put my hand in someone else’s pocket ', thereby saying 'I am free from it.’ But is that really so? We must look back on our own lives, in order to ensure that we are not casually wasting the Buddha's teachings through such blasé attitudes.

Paragraph 9.4.2
The first of the Five Precepts is abstention from killing living beings. While the word kill may imply direct murder, it also is about harming and hurting another life. For example, when a child rips away a dragonfly’s wing as a prank, the act itself may not kill the dragonfly immediately. It will try to fly away, albeit on one wing. Would this not fall under killing then? It still does. It is a gross violation of the body of another sentient being, and thus a violation of the first precept. We experience with our own bodies the wisdom of this teaching. Nowadays, we cannot even drink tap water without worrying, because of concerns about chemical pollutions from pesticides. We have begun to use pesticides to increase the harvest yield from some time ago. In our tradition, our ancestors did not come up with the idea standing in competition with any living being, thinking 'I will drive out these things and monopolize it.' Their thought was of ‘sharing’ when the rat or bugs ate some products of their labour, not ‘will never allow it’, even to the point of committing killing actions to ‘monopolise these crops.’

Paragraph 9.4.3
But with the usage of pesticides, we began to kill the so-called pests. For the pesticide, which is known as ‘crop medicine (農藥),’ the name is also ridiculous. Why is the word 'medicine' used to describe pesticide? It's not a medicine, it's used for killing. Anyway, since we started using these insecticides, and powerful pesticides to maximise the harvest, farming had become more profitable. Perhaps, this also helped to solve the food problem of the growing human population. Perhaps true, in the short term at least, but this is a very serious problem in the long run. It has been only a few decades since we started to use pesticides in our farming, a tradition which goes back thousands of years. Using pesticide even during that short period is resulting in a terrible karma coming back to us.

Paragraph 9.4.4
Life was not meant to be harmed in any way, for any cause, yet we did a terrible thing in breaking this strict precept in the name of "doing an economic farming" or "running a scientific farm". We have begun to kill and massacre systematically, and the karma is coming back to us shortly. Now, we cannot drink water in peace, and our beautiful nature, which had been passed down to us over millennia, is now polluted by terrible poison of our own making. If the underground water is contaminated in the future, it is truly scary to imagine how we would deal with such a situation.

Paragraph 9.4.5
The starting point of this trouble is that we have subconsciously ignored the concept of 'do not hurt life, save and honour all lives, and treat other life like your own.' We have failed to pay attention to the sanctity of life under many different reasons, and have been left facing a tremendous situation. We are already on the back of a tiger in full flight, and cannot get off now. If you do not use pesticides, you cannot farm nowadays. Perhaps if science develops further in the coming future, serious events may be averted. However, as long as we are prepared to hurt other lives for the benefit of our own profit, then no amount of technological advancement can save us from the karma of our actions. If you think you can avoid the crisis thanks to science, you should think again. Thinking of the Five Precepts, you will know that karma cannot be avoided.

Paragraph 9.4.6
Medicines we have received from the West in recent times also incorporate the philosophy of killing. The attitude of our ancestors to a disease in the old days is similar to the farming attitudes mentioned above. If your body is imbalanced and weak in some parts, you can regenerate vitality by using medicine, or stimulating it with acupuncture.

Paragraph 9.4.7
However, western medicine is different from its inception. It supposes a demon behind the disease. This demon would be called germs. They must be found and destroyed through whatever means. Whether by medicine or by operation, health can only be regained by killing germs. Medicine used to kill germs is injected into our body. This is not the medicine that regenerates vitality, but germ-killing medicine which is put into our bodies. But as in the case of pesticides, germs have now developed resistance in order to not to be killed. This calls for a stronger medicine to kill the resistant germs. Then this would call for an even stronger medicine. They would compete with each other forever. In this way, our body is transformed into a battlefield of infinite competition between terrible poison and vitality. Our body itself becomes battlefield.

This has become so only recently. Before, we (East Asian) people, if our body became sick, went to the traditional clinic and took medicine to revitalise ourselves, or regain bodily balance. If we couldn’t be cured, it was accepted as such. But now, like the use of pesticide, we put these so-called medicines into our body. We have now begun to replace our organs, as if they were some mechanical parts.

It is only in front of death that we the arrogant and ignorant becomes humble. However, in the future, even death will not be a humbling occasion, but just another opportunity to complain about materials and money. 'There is a latest model of liver from some factory in another country, yet I must die because I have no money.’ When such a time arrives, our awe at life and fear at our mortality will disappear. A while ago, we would say "bback (corrupted form of ‘connection’ or ‘backer’ in Korean language) " when we die, but now we will be yelling “money!” as we exhale our final breathe. Such a person is a tragic human being who gives up the tremendous chance of noble self-awakening and looking back on his life at his deathbed, and who will not even have the chance to learn the lesson of death. Thus, there is bitterness at being unable to listen to these tales of organ donation as a gesture of kindness.

Let’s stop discussing abstention from killing living beings for the moment, and move on to the abstention from theft This means “do not steal”, which has its origin in the phrase, "do not take what is not given." If we are not given, we should not take, even if they are scattered all around the roadside. If we think about this precept, we would not know what to do. Nowadays, we do not want to wait to be given something, but risk our lives to take everything we can. Well, let's just say that we do not engage in theft as it would be against the law.

There are still many thefts we are engaging legitimately. We are stealing from what our descendants should be able to enjoy, stealing from what would become their properties. Polluting the environment is a typical example. We inherited a clean environment from our ancestors. We have an obligation, as a parent and as a forerunner, to make it clearer and more beautiful for our descendants. We have not only received these gifts as a descendent ourselves, but we also have a responsibility to pass on to our own descendants. But now we are too greedy, so we have to abuse, misuse and undermine the nature that our descendants should enjoy for our own gratification. Is this not a robbery? It is stealing, right in front of history. While doing so, we are shouting loudly, "We will develop the economy and pass on a richer and stronger society to our descendants."

It would be fine if the result is limited to the spiritual devastation of our generation, but we are already devouring all the environments and resources our next generations deserve. What does this mean? We are committing the sin of stealing. And we are receiving the karma. But the problem is that we do not see anyone speaks up and says, “This is not good,” and try to stop, or disagree with by saying “no, we must not do this.” Every dissenting opinion hides itself in light of economic growth, and large-scale thievery is carried out publicly in broad daylight.

We should try to make a fundamental change in value so that we do not want to just spend a little less, but that there would be a less desire to spend in the first place. That way, we can attain Right View (sammā-diṭṭhi), which we’ve discussed previously. 'Simple life' is a good word. How pleasant it would be if our lives were simple? We are all too busy, aren’t we? When I look into this, there are many cases when we choose to flee into busyness for the fear of idleness. Perhaps it is the simple life that you are most afraid of. Why did you become frightened at the prospect of idle time? That is the result of having incorrect Right View, and Right Thought. You can’t stand the boredom when you become idle. Let us look at the ‘abstention from sexual misconduct’. This precept applies both to the ordained monk or a lay Buddhist, but there is a different expectation placed upon each party. For a layman, a family is built upon a connection between a husband and a wife, so sexual need cannot be ignored outright as it is for the monks.
There is a rule to yin and yang becoming one. This world, in which we must endure, has a basic rule where yin and yang existing in harmony, whether physically or spiritually. Therefore, there is a very important rule here. That is not to conduct sexual misdeeds. If this rule was to be broken, then the rule of the world that we must endure becomes shaken at the foundation. Thus, the abstention from sexual misconduct is a crucial rule in this world. So, please remember that abstention from sexual misconduct is not something to be overlooked. I am certain that all attendees are examples of society when it comes to this precept, so I will not dally on this topic any further.

Paragraph 9.4.25
Now we will move on to the ‘abstention from falsehood (不妄語)’. The abstention from falsehood also has a separate area devoted under ‘Right Speech’ of Noble Eightfold Path, indicating its utmost importance. I have already mentioned its importance briefly. Today’s age is also an age of corrupted language. We talk of pollution, but language pollution is really serious. It is a corruption indicative of the modern times.

Paragraph 9.4.26
If we say language is polluted, it means pollution by language has become institutionalised. It is as if pollution by words has become the basic axis of this society. Pollution through language is too insidious, structural and affects so broadly, it is difficult to feel. It is the same logic where great thief is no longer a thief. Of the language pollution, the pollution in the form of ideology is especially serious in this age. In terms of Buddhism, it is a theory playing with theory (戱論). By playing with the words, everything becomes packaged with great labels such as academic, ideology, thoughts, and value, while the basic values stressed by the Five Precept is simply ignored and hidden. This is the fundamental problem here.

Paragraph 9.4.27
I am also embarrassed at how even the religion is helping a big part in this phenomenon. Perhaps that primary responsibility should fall on the so-called spiritual leaders. It is our deficiency, which leads to the laypeople creating a whole-scale scam to trick the world with a framework of little spirituality. How lacking the truth must be for these falsities to be so spread across the world? We often fault ourselves with such thoughts.

Paragraph 9.4.28
The most serious symptom of language pollution is that people are no longer seeking for the truth at all. 'How can I keep to the truth and live? It would be costly.‘ The very things that are so important are discarded under that logic. And that is why the abstention from falsehood is important in present day.

Paragraph 9.4.29
The next is the abstention from intoxication (不飮酒). Amongst the Five Precepts, the first four are often called the old precepts (舊戒), while the abstention from intoxication is known as the new precepts (新戒). If the old precepts were a set of values that people looked to obey regardless of their denomination, abstention from intoxication was introduced first by Buddhism. As such, abstention from intoxication is one of the strong emphasising points of Buddhism.

Paragraph 9.4.30
So why the abstention from intoxication? From the modern perspective, you would be surprised at the Buddha’s wisdom. For we are all witnesses to the widespread abuse of so many intoxicants affecting humanity – not only alcohol, but also drugs. As parents, you’d be worried for the children falling wayward under these intoxicants, and it helps you understand how the Buddha was wise in calling for abstention from intoxication.

Paragraph 9.4.31
Originally, to say ‘the abstention from intoxication’ has meant ‘no drinking of fermented grain or fruit wines’. This was to say, not to intake fermented beverages which would cause or encourage heedlessness (放逸). This was because fermented beverages were the only things that clouded the minds and caused heedlessness in the past. But this is no longer the case in the present day. Many new intoxicants have been found. So, we can no longer boast of abstaining from intoxication by being teetotal. Narcotic drugs are one of the key substances that affects human mind, and outside of that there are television, games and many other intoxicating products. These are all invading our lives, and lead us down the path of heedlessness.

Paragraph 9.4.32
Heedfulness is to lose hold of your mind. Appamāda (不放逸) is to be diligent in ‘keeping hold of your mind’, that is to say, to conscientious and heedful of mind. Buddha’s message as he attained enlightenment was ‘All that is phenomenal (諸行) are impermanent (無常), Strive on with heedfulness’. It was the final words of the Buddha. Alcohol and other intoxicants encourage heedlessness, so one can only keep to this precept by keeping distance from these intoxicants. Only when we strive to be forever vigilant against the temptations towards heedlessness, and recognise ‘these are what causes heedlessness’, only then will we be able to attain abstention from intoxicants. And thus, we have covered the details of Five Precepts and their range within the context of modern times.
