Knowledge and Wisdom
Paragraph 1.9.1
Knowledge and Wisdom
We are now trying to figure out how to elevate our knowing stuck in the level of knowledge due to tricks of vinna and sanna to the level of wisdom. First of all, we need to correctly know the relationship between knowledge and wisdom.

Paragraph 1.9.2
Buddhism is the religion of wisdom. Even though charitable and compassionate attitude is highly emphasized in Buddhism, its proper exercise should be accompanied by wisdom playing a central and steadying role. Lacking wisdom, it can be a futile excercise. Wisdom needs to be developed mature in a balanced manner. Though it is not easy to know what wisdom is, we may be able to get a sense of it in a broader context. If we understand that Buddhism pursues enlightenment and Nibbana and that Buddhist teaching(Dhamma) plays a central role in that pursuit, we may get a sense that wisdom is to know the Dhamma. In a word, that means to know in a proper way the Dhamma which takes us to enlightenment and Nibbana. This world of suffering benefits from knowledges related to understanding and utilization of nature and society such as physics, chemistry, politics and economics, while Buddhism provides wisdom which is related to, and lead to enlightenment and Nibbana.

Paragraph 1.9.3
In the West humans are normally understood to comprise body and spirit, a dichotomous view that is. Buddhism takes caution against this type of dichotomy which is suspected to be the product of vinnana. The Twelve Links of Dependent Origination instead uses three concepts of vinnana, nama and rupa, and expounds that humans comprise Five Attached Heaps. The dichotomous view of 'body and mind' has been widely accepted because it has appeared plausible to the humankind. But it actually is ambiguous and can be unhelpful in developing wisdom. I would maintain, therefore, that we should overcome the limits of this dichotomous view and to turn to vinnana, nama and rupa in our approach to understanding at the least.

Paragraph 1.9.4
That is due to the fact that Buddhism views worldly phenomena as a cause-effect process among various elements rather than the dichotomous view, and further expounds that vinnana as one level among various wisdoms. Knowing is the basis of wisdom, and there are various types and levels of knowing as well.

Paragraph 1.9.5
Vinnana is at the lowest level of wisdoms, because thinking is the result of a mental function which this inferior vinnana and nama carry out. So-called reasoning is a type of thinking. Philosophical reasoning and scientific knowledges are the products of systemization of thoughts. However, Buddhism believes in the actual existence of far wider and higher world, and sets its target of practice on entering that world.

Paragraph 1.9.6
Sanna corresponds to the level of nama. As I said a while ago, sanna is the knowledge gained through education. Born within a certain cultural tradition, cultural learning such as family, school and social educations contributes to allow certain dominating conventions to organize and rule the mind of humans. Even though we tend to say that 'I think', in fact what happens is that it simply reflects conventions, received through the process of social educations, and working according to their habits and logic. If the assumption that 'I think' is right, how come that thinking keeps changing all the time? Why yesterday's thoughts are different from today's? Is it really 'I think'?

Paragraph 1.9.7
Thinking occurs at one level of cognition ability, low level that is. It is sanna that supports this low level of intellectual function at first, and vinnana intervenes at a much larger and more fundamental level. If sanna is like common norms shared in the community, vinnana is self-consciousness, subconscious knowledge connected to the sense of self.

Paragraph 1.9.8
While there are these kinds of low level of cognition, there is panna, which is translated into wisdom. It sees things as it is, which is made possible because it does not turn to intervention of self-consciousness.

Paragraph 1.9.9
Even panna has many levels as well. If we could stick to meditation and efforts for internal maturation, we would be introduced into 'abbinna', an amazing world of wisdom, which is normally interpreted as a 'supernatural power'. From this level, we move on to the level of wisdom, called parinna, which means '확철하다‘. The next and final stage is called anna in which truth reveals itself. At this highest level of wisdom, we do not approach truth with concept and see things as it is. That means this world is far from thinking, a mere process of vinnana and sanna.

Paragraph 1.9.10
Like this, Buddhism posits a catalogue of wisdoms with a differing order such as wisdoms of insects, humans, heavenly gods and Buddha. Interestingly vinnana also has different levels. Vinnana is a type of wisdom rather than an opposite concept because it has a sort of wisdom-vinnana. But we should bear in mind that it is the mere function of tricks of knowing within certain bounds and categories. In a word, vinnana and wisdom are connected in continuity, and there exists certain area where vinnana dominates.

Paragraph 1.9.11
Seen from this viewpoint, vinnana constitutes a seed for the lowest level of wisdom. Since vinnana is part of nanna, it is part of the family of wisdom. Due to this relationship between vinnana and wisdom, we may progress from vinnana into wisdom. This is the particular characteristic of Buddhist approach.

Paragraph 1.9.12
A disciple asked the Buddha, 'how wisdom is different from vinnana? ', to which he answered, 'they are same'. Then what is the difference? Vinnana is something to be reduced as much as possible by thorough understanding, while wisdom to be increased as much as possible by continued practice. We should give a thoughtful consideration to this meaning. Since the more vinnana accumulates the tighter would be the shackles which bind us to cycles of rebirth, we should exert our efforts to reduce it. On the other hand, we should increase wisdom because more wisdom leads to more chances for escaping from cycles of rebirth.

Paragraph 1.9.13
Vinnana always works by discriminating you and me as well as yours and mine. As it grows, attachment to self becomes stronger, leading to egoism and ego-centric thinking. How this kind of self-centered ones could attain enlightenment? They will be pulled more strongly towards cycles of rebirth rather getting refuge from suffering of existence. Because of this, elimination of vinnana leads to attainment of enlightenment.

Paragraph 1.9.14
Vinnana is the main culprit which constitutes the world and binds us to the cycles of rebirth. The problem is that since it is formless and unrecognizable, it is not easily susceptible to elimination. That is the reason why many people, while wanting to reach enlightenment, tend to veer off the right course to wrong directions. Immensely thankfully, however, the Buddha opens the door wide open for us to eradicate vinnana and to enter into wisdom.
