The Middle Way as a way to wisdom
Paragraph 1.12.1
The Middle Way is the right path to wisdom
The Buddha says, 'the Noble Eightfold Path is the sole right way to enlightenment and Nibbana. And the Path is none other than the Middle Way. ' To paraphrase it in light of today's subject, he means that the Middle Way of the Path is the useful tool in suppressing consciousness.

Paragraph 1.12.2
As I have explained several times before, the Middle Way is different from Mean. This concept is widely referred to in confucian societies in Northeastern Asia and has almost same meanings with the Golden Mean of the West. It practically means the state of being not too much and not too little. One may say that it is the philosophy on an art of living. But the Middle Way in Buddhism is quite different since it goes beyond the state of mean. In a sense, it may sound a rather radical concept.

Paragraph 1.12.3
Let us take the example of teachings 'to abstain from telling lies. ' With regards to this, the Middle Way, rather than teaching us to decide whether to tell lies depending on the situations, urges a complete abstention from it. For monks who have left worldly life and seek the truth, there exist no fear for worldly opinion and no need for compromise. That should make possible a strict compliance with the precepts. This is the Middle Way however it may sound counterintuitive. If you confuse it with the concept of mean, it surely remains difficult to understand.

Paragraph 1.12.4
In exercising practice, to refuse extremities of suffering and pleasure is called the Middle Way. And this is also applied to reasoning by avoiding extremities of being and nothingness such as existence of self. All these attitudes to extreme suffering and extreme pleasure in practice as well as extreme view of sure being and nothingness in reasoning are to be excluded. If any, reasoning based on being and nothingness is the function of consciousness. Since consciousness amounts to the state of wisdom being obscured, exclusion of these extremities is the Middle Way to wisdom.

Paragraph 1.12.5
Furthermore, taking over from consciousness, perception works in perceiving and reasoning by objectifying things and alienating from oneself. Intervention by perception takes us far away from truth, because it makes us believe in the actual existence of what we imagine and suppose about non-existent things. This mirage-producing sanna is behind all these extremities.

Paragraph 1.12.6
The Middle Way of the Path works to neutralize sanna by suppressing its function, and further extends its influence to curve vinnana. This way we would stay away from the viewpoint of seeing the world in extremities of being and nothingness and open the door to enter wisdom.
